Answers to these and other daily travel questions will help the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) get a complete picture of regional transportation patterns which will help us to better plan for future improvements.


We want to hear from you! NYMTC strongly values your participation in this survey. The information participants provide will indicate how roads, public transportation, bike lanes, and sidewalks are used today, and how they can be improved to make travel better in the future.

About the Survey

What is this survey all about?

We want to hear about your daily transportation habits: How do you travel? Where do you go? How much does it cost? Our goal is to get a complete picture of regional transportation patterns to better plan for future improvements.

Why should I participate?

By taking part, you will represent your neighbors as well as other people who share your daily travel experience around the region. Technologies and the ways people travel are changing quickly, and we need your help to plan for the future. You’ll also receive a gift card when you complete the survey.

How was I selected to participate?

Your address was selected at random from across the the greater New York City metropolitan area. Random sampling is an important part of making sure the survey represents all regional residents.

Who is sponsoring this survey?

This survey is sponsored by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC). NYMTC provides a collaborative planning forum to address transportation-related issues, develop regional plans, and make decisions on the use of federal transportation funds for the greater New York metropolitan region.

Completing the Survey

How much time does it take to participate?

It takes 5 minutes to set up the app on your smartphone, and just 5 minutes per day for one week to complete the survey.

What do I get for participating?

Each participating adult will receive a $10 gift card as thanks after completing the survey. To complete the survey, use the rMove smartphone app for one week and answer all of your surveys within the app.

How does the rMove smartphone app work?

Once it is installed on your phone, rMove will log your travel. A few minutes after you finish a trip, rMove will ask you about the details of your trip. The app will also ask a few questions at the end of each day. You can answer these surveys any time during the day, but please do not answer them while driving! Participants should keep their phones with them any time they travel.

What if I don’t travel much?

Any number of trips (even if you don’t make any) will help us build an accurate picture of how, when, and why people make trips (or why they don’t make trips). Don’t forget that short trips, such as walking the dog or going for a jog, count too. 

What if my transportation habits during the survey aren’t my “typical” habits?

That’s no problem - we still encourage you to participate. We’ll also ask questions about how you typically travel.
